Michigan’s spookiest graveyards just in time for Halloween, ‘Detroit Free Press,’ 10/08/22

Michigan is home to many things: Faygo, Better Made Potato Chips, the Motor City and the iconic Coney hot dogs.

The Mitten allegedly is also home to some of the spookiest graveyards.

With the ghost and goblin season approaching, the hunt for all things haunted — graveyards, houses, corn mazes, forests — or anything even marginally scary is its at peak.

Here are some of the spookiest graveyards across metro Detroit, according to social media and blogs that focus on ghosts and the paranormal. Before taking time to visit these locations, note the hours of operation to avoid trespassing and risking arrest.

Elmwood Cemetery in Detroit is one of the places rumored to be haunted by ghosts.

1. Redford Cemetery

Home to an urban legend called the “The Gardener’s Grave,” a grave that stands to the left of the entrance. Rumor has it that if you stand in the area too long, the smell of death will reach you. The smell follows with the ghost of the gardener appearing and allegedly coming near you over the hills and eventually disappearing in a matter of seconds.

Another paranormal event rumored to have occurred here is the sound of a woman crying at night. Some visitors say the ground started to shake or that a dark figure followed them through the forest area of the graveyard.

2. Pere Cheney Cemetery

Roscommon, once a lively town that has seen its share of troubles, is now a shell of its former self especially after nearly everyone there died of diphtheria in 1917. Now, when folks visit this all-around eerie place, they claim to have see lights in the surrounding forest and random hand prints on their cars.

3. Findlay Cemetery

A “misty blue figure” is rumored to linger around the cemetery that dates to the 1700s. This cemetery is also home to the so-called Ada Witch, a ghost who is known to tap unsuspecting visitors on the shoulder as they walk through the cemetery.

6. Elmwood Cemetery

The oldest continuously operating, nondenominational cemetery in Detroit is home to many notable Michigan residents — from governors to musicians to Civil War soldiers. Visitors report seeing flashes of lights and orbs throughout the cemetery. Last year, a tour was hosted along the 86 acres of the cemetery where visitors could get a glance at the hidden graves and supposedly cursed tombstones.

7. Reynolds Cemetery

On Nov. 22, 1883, the Crouch family was brutally slain — one of the deadliest unsolved slayings in Jackson’s history. More deaths in the family happened over the next two months. Rumors spread that after the deaths, hazy, ghost-like mist traveled at night throughout St. John cemetery in Jackson to Reynolds Cemetery in Spring Arbor, which is five miles away from where one of the Crouch family members is buried. For years, folks would gather on the night of Nov. 22 in an effort to witness a supernatural appearance until local police put a stop to it.

9. Hawks Head Cemetery — McDowell Cemetery

Formerly Hawks Head Cemetery, McDowell Cemetery is rumored to be home to Al Capone’s mistress, Flora. Indeed there is a gravestone at the cemetery that simply says “Flora,” with no last name and no dates. It’s rumored that she pays a visit to ghost seekers throughout the night, but first, you will see a dull red light or “ghost light” notifying you that she can feel your presence, and hand prints may be left on your car window. A ghostly figure is also rumored to have been seen walking around the cemetery.

12. Mouth Cemetery – Muskegon County

One of the oldest known cemeteries in Michigan dates to 1851. Old tales tell of enemy tribes killing Native American villagers that lived nearby. At night, it’s rumored that you can hear footsteps only to find no one there. The sound of screams or mist also were rumored to occur in the surrounding woods. Other urban legends include a man who died in a car accident one year after sitting in a chair inside the cemetery. Many came to the cemetery to sit in the same chair but it since has been removed.

13. Woodlawn Cemetery

This graveyard is filled with many famous Michiganders, including Edsel Ford, Temptations lead singer David Ruffin and other Motown musicians like Levi Stubbs and Lawrence Payton. With that sparks an interest in what creeps through the night or in the shadows when no one is looking.

14. Oakwood Cemetery

It’s rumored that when you enter this particular graveyard from the west gate and drive down a bit, you’ll come near to a peculiar-looking tree with a knothole. Once you stop and put your car in neutral, you’ll allegedly roll back up the hill. After a certain point, you’ll start rolling back down again. This works for some but for others, no luck.
